A phrase with origins in the physical world and quite a literal meaning, ‘above the fold’ signifies the top half of a newspaper when it’s folded for delivery; also the most seen part of the newspaper as a result. The front page and top half especially is reserved for the most important story/ information/ advert etc. Just like with newspapers this has now been extended to include websites and in particular all the pages you land on and what you see there before scrolling down.
Therefore it is considered quite important (and rightfully so) to make an impact on the homepage or on pages ‘above the fold’ in web design and for SEO purposes too. It makes sense that you want to stand out and show off your best work immediately before anybody has even had a chance to scroll.
